Introduction to Education & Training
The Observatory seeks to offer education and training for those interested in the field of palliative and end of life care, locally and globally. To this end, Observatory faculty and staff are involved in several formats of education and training. Many of our programs are designed to address the needs of both full and part time students, both those new to the field and those who are working professionals interested in furthering their knowledge in palliative and end of life care research.
Masters in Hospice Leadership: ** New **
This postgraduate qualification is designed to address development needs and challenges facing leaders in palliative and end-of-life care both now and in the future. A pilot programme has been developed to include chief executives, senior managers and suitably qualified people who aspire to lead hospices both in the UK and overseas. It is envisaged that the collective learning experienced by a pilot cohort of 18 participants will become a laboratory for developing strategies, conducting research and informing the development and succession of leaders in the hospice movement.

Master’s by Research in Health Research, End of Life Care Pathway
(Online Distance Learning):
In collaboration with our university department, the Institute for Health Research, we are pleased to be convening an End of Life Care pathway in the Master’s by Research on Health Research. The programme is delivered by online distance learning, allowing excellent schedule flexibility and international access. Teaching takes place via collaborative guided web-based discussion, individual reading and individual research. The End of Life Care Pathway allows specialization in research specifically applicable to the field of palliative and end of life care, covering material such as historical and global perspectives, conceptual service and practice models, and research methods and challenges. Students have the option of pursuing a Postgraduate Certificate, and Postgraduate Diploma or the Masters by Research. For more information about this program, please follow the link:

Observatory Summer School:
The Summer School offers an intensive opportunity to learn social research methods relevant to palliative and end of life care. The programme entails a full week of structured teaching with an optional second week of individualized mentored instruction on a particular project of interest. The intensive teaching in the first week introduces students to a variety of methodologies and approaches to research. The course is ideal for people seeking an introduction to research methods and/or wishing to explore potential for further education in palliative and end of life care research. CPD accreditation is applied for from the Faculty of Public Health before each school commences.
Postgraduate Students:
The Observatory enjoys the involvement of several postgraduate students, full and part time, who are pursuing Masters and Doctoral level research in the field of palliative and end of life care. Students arrive with a wide variety of educational and professional backgrounds that inform that individualized programme of study.
Additional Education and Training:
In addition to presenting at national and international conferences, Observatory faculty and staff are honoured to participate in education and training opportunities throughout the university. For example, our faculty contributes to the teaching of students in the Doctorate of Clinical Psychology and the Centre for Medical Education, as well as the Department of Continuing Education’s Senior Learner’s Programme.
