The International Observatory on End of Life Care (IOELC) has published its Open Society Institute-funded review of hospice and palliative developments in the countries of Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines. Authored by Michael Wright, Ednin Hamzah, Temsak Phungrassami and Agnes Bausa-Claudio, the report provides a narrative history of hospice and palliative care in these three countries of south-eastern Asia. Details are included of current services - describing how they are funded and re-imbursed - together with estimates of workforce capacity and an overview of educational programmes. Individual ‘success stories’ are acknowledged, together with oral histories of key individuals. Data on opioid availability are also presented, along with information on the country’s population, public health context, epidemiology, health care system and political economy; key ethical issues are described. The report is available via the IOELC website and may be downloaded from the link to the right of this page or the image below.
