Albania's Political Economy
In the early 1990s the Albanian government began to allow opposition parties, after the collapse of communism elsewhere in Eastern Europe and following popular protests within the country itself. Privatisation of state lands soon followed. In 1997 however there was a major collapse of several so-called pyramid savings schemes, leading to widespread violence and civil unrest.
