Current services in Argentina

Hospice activist Gustavo de Simone, consultant in palliative care and senior lecturer at the University of “del Salvador”, says:

‘From three or four teams at the beginning of 90s, we have more than 80 teams now throughout the country; 11 of them working in paediatric palliative care.’2

Most of these services are hospital based although a small number of the more developed services also provide home care (table 1). Marta Junin, sister in palliative care, gives an account of current palliative care developments in Buenos Aires public hospitals:

‘…amongst our 33 hospitals, we have got 9 hospitals that have “developing” or “mature” teams… that is, teams that have been working in palliative care for more or less ten years… “Developing” teams are mature teams that have been re-structured…and that they are in continuous development’3

As yet, there are no free-standing hospices. Only a few of these services are multiprofessional beyond a palliative care physician and nurse.
