In 1997, the population of Argentina was made up of around 17.50 million males and 18.17 million females. Live births totalled 363,105 males and 349,140 females.
In the same year, there were 267,136 registered deaths (147,704 males, 119,136 females). Among these deaths, the highest number was due to diseases of the circulatory system; 48,264 males, 43,838 females. Malignant neoplasms were the second major cause of death; 28,295 males, 23,260 females (a total of 144.5 per 100,000 population).
In 2001, cardiovascular diseases represented the first cause of death in the country amongst both the male and the female population and malignant tumours were in second place. Respiratory diseases were in third place.28
In 2003, it was estimated that the Argentinean population grew 1.05% with a life expectancy rate of 74.4 years for the total population (table 7).
