From the 1850s to the 1950s, the population was swelled by the arrival of European immigrants, mainly from Italy and Spain. The official language is Spanish, and 92% of Argentineans are Roman Catholics.
Protestants and Jewish represent 2% whilst other faiths represent 4% of the population.
Due to the current economic constraints, younger people are leaving Argentina - many of them returning to the homelands of their ancestors.
According to 1995 estimates, ninety-six per cent of the population are literate and most people live in urban areas in 2003 (table 6).
