Palliative care is not recognized as a medical specialty in Argentina. As a result, most financial resources come from non-governmental organizations and most health professionals work on a voluntary basis.

During the second half of 2004, efforts have been made in the context of the Argentinean Association for Medicine and Palliative Care (AAMyCP) towards obtaining official recognition and professional certification in palliative care for physicians and social workers.⁴
