The Gambia

Gambia (population 1.55 million people) is a country in Western Africa that covers an area of 11,300 square kilometres. Its boundaries border the North Atlantic Ocean and Senegal. The capital of Gambia is Banjul.


According to the United Nations human development index (HDI), Gambia is ranked 155/177 countries worldwide (value 0.452)1 and 24/45 African countries for which an index is available. This places Gambia in the group of countries with low human development.
