Reimbursement & Funding for Services in The Gambia
Future Hospice Care is a charity and relies on fundraising and voluntary donations for its income. Financial pressures are severe and since the service began, two nurses have left due to financial constraints. Future Care Hospice needs financial assistance to train personnel, expand their services and improve the availability of drugs.5
The Global Fund has committed significant funding to HIV/AIDS programmes in the Republic of the Gambia in Round 3 of an extensive strategy to combat the effects of the AIDS pandemic6. The agreement was signed on 31 August 2004 with the National AIDS Secretariat of the Republic of the Gambia.
The project aims to provide the highest standard of available treatment, care and support to people living with and/or affected by HIV/AIDS. USD 6,241,743.00 has been approved to implement the project over 2 years. Although palliative care is not mentioned in the proposal the project goal includes some elements of holistic care. The provision of antiretroviral therapies is part of a continuum of care that includes compassion, support and the alleviation of stigma.
