Nairobi Hospice

The service offers home visits to patients within 25 kilometres radius from Nairobi. It is estimated that this serves a population of 3 million.³⁵ The majority of referrals are made by Kenyatta National Hospital.

Meru Hospice

The radius covered by this service is up to 100 kms, but more realistically the patient catchment is within a radius of about 20-50 kms as transport difficulties limit visits. The approximate population is 800,000 to 1.2 million. Referrals come mainly from the district hospital. Local patients who have received treatments in Nairobi are advised by Nairobi Hospice to contact Meru Hospice once they return home.

Eldoret Hospice

The Hospice receives patients mainly from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital and the surrounding hospitals. Patients come from a radius of about 150 kms.

Coast Hospice

The Coast province has a population of about 3 million people. Mombasa city has approximately 1 million people. Coast Hospice is responsible for palliative care patients in the whole province. The attending doctor at the Coast Provincial General Hospital completes the hospice referral form in order that the patient can receive palliative care after discharge. Referral forms are circulated to all hospitals and clinics and public talks raise awareness of the service.

Nyeri Hospice

The districts of Nyeri, Kerugoya, Murang'a, Laikipia and Nyandarua are covered by this hospice. Satellite hospices in these areas are planned to take palliative care into these communities. A satellite hospice at Nyahururu has been established.
