There is a 40-bedded hospice wing within the Kyrgyz Institute of Oncology and Radiation, Bishkek. Medical materials and equipment for the unit have been supplied by the University of Kansas Medical Center and by Carelift International. A homecare service is now being developed. A Lutheran church in Bishkek supports the work of the hospice financially as well as with materials and volunteers. A second hospice unit at Karakol in the eastern corner of the country was established in December 2000 as an affiliate of the hospice in Bishkek. There may be some attempt underway to establish another hospice unit at the Trauma Hospital in Bishkek.6 There are a total of approximately 55 hospice beds in Kyrgyzstan.7
