Latvia's Political Economy
The economy of Latvia went into serious difficulties in the years immediately after independence, but began to recover from 1994. However, a banking collapse occurred in 1995, requiring massive assistance from the International Monetary Fund. Unemployment, which had been rising since 1992, reached 10.1% in May 1999. Nevertheless, the transformation of the economy in Latvia has proceeded more quickly than in most parts of the former Soviet Union.
