Moldova
Title: Map of MoldovaMoldova occupies 33,843 km2 of land to the north-east of Romania. It is bordered by Romania to the south-west and Ukraine to the north, east and south. The capital is Chisinau. Moldova has a population of 4.43 million. In 1989 the ethnic mix was estimated at Moldovan/Romanian 65%; Ukrainian 14%, Russian 13%, Gaugaz 4%, Jewish 2%, Bulgarian 2%.

Life expectancy at birth for males is 60.1 years; 69.3 years for females. Formerly ruled by Romania, Moldova became part of the Soviet Union at the close of World War II. Although independent from the USSR since 1991, Russian forces have remained on Moldovan territory east of the Nistru (Dnister) River supporting the Slavic majority population, mostly Ukrainians and Russians, who have proclaimed a "Transnistria" republic. 1
