Opioid Availability and Consumption in Moldova
An ordinance of the Ministry of Health controls opiate availability in Moldova; representatives of 'Hospice Angelus' have been in discussion with Medipharma Medical with a view to identifying a source of opioids in tablet form. It is also said that; 'During the Soviet period all oncological patients received drugs free of charge. Now in the majority of cases they buy them from pharmacies with special prescriptions. There are 770 patients who receive drugs in Balti, but the government allocated only 551,000 lei ($35,000) for a year. It is not enough because, for example, 10 ampoules of morphine cost $5. The medium salary is $20-30.'7
INCB data on opioid consumption in 1998 in Moldova report figures only for codeine (2 kg) and morphine (3 kg). The average daily consumption of defined daily doses per million inhabitants of these drugs between 1994-98 was codeine (14) and morphine (39).8
