There is no formal training in palliative care in Namibia. Doctors and nurses are exposed to the Ministry of Health and Social Services guidelines for clinical management of HIV/AIDS and other chronic diseases.
Home based care volunteers are trained by their organizations. Over 1700 trained and active Catholic AIDS Action volunteers each received 64 hours of training by the end of 2004. They are supported by monthly visits by staff, and receive limited incentives and supplies for their time. The volunteers’ home care curriculum briefly covers psycho-social support of children and paediatric HIV.12
