Romania (population 21.37 million)¹ is a country located in South Eastern Central Europe that covers an area of 237,500 square kilometres. Its land boundaries border the Black Sea with Bulgaria to the south, Serbia and Montenegro to the west, Hungary and Ukraine to the north, and Moldavia and Ukraine to the east.²

According to the United Nations human development index (HDI), Romania is ranked 64/177 countries worldwide (value 0.792).³ This places Romania in the group of countries with medium human development.
