In 2005, an estimated 66 health professionals (the majority part time) were working in palliative care in Romania, including 14 physicians, 40 nurses, seven social workers, two psychologists, two physiotherapists and one occupational therapist. In addition there are four spiritual counsellors or leaders and an estimated 160 volunteers working in hospice and palliative care around the country44. Many volunteers are from abroad (mainly from UK, France, USA, and Australia), often offering help for indefinite periods of time.
