National and Professional Associations in Russia
The following organisations are concerned with palliative care in Russia:
The European Association of Palliative Care; Russia is a member of the Association. Three delegates from Russia attended the EAPC Conference in London (1999); 7 in Palermo (2001)
Association of Palliative Medicine: founded in 1993 'to promote co-operation amongst palliative care services in Russia'9. Founding Co-Chairs - Dr Vladimir Sharunov (Ivanovo Hospice) and Dr Elena Sterleva (Kolpino Hospice)
The Russian Palliative Care Association (President - Andrei Gnesdilov; Vice President - Vera Millionshchikova): seeks to network and support those involved in palliative care throughout Russia
The Samara Association of Hospice Workers was formed in 2001 to provide a forum and mutual support for those working within hospice
The BEARR Trust: British Emergency Action to Russia and the Republics
Charity Know How: an initiative of the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office
HealthProm: The Association for the Promotion of Health Care in the former Soviet Union. Since 1992, the emphasis of HealthProm's work has been on developing partnership projects with city and regional health departments. The Hospice and Palliative Care Programme has been established to promote hospice as 'a collection of ideas and attitudes, an array of service based on a holistic philosophy of living and dying'10
The British Russian Hospice Society. Founded in 1990 by Victor Zorza to support the development of hospice in Russia11.
The Victor Zorza Trust. Established in 2000, the trust has a particular interest in education 12
Voluntary Service Overseas: have supported the placement of nurses
The St Petersburg Health Care Trust (Colchester UK), plays an influential role in sustaining and developing palliative care in St Petersburg. Support includes the provision of equipment, education, grant negotiations and funding 13
St Petersburg hospices have developed an association with their local rotary club and a number of clubs internationally. These include: the Rotary Club of Colchester, UK ; Rotary Club of Besancon, France; Rotary Club of Frederick, Maryland, USA; Berlin Institute of Rotary International, Germany
