Zambia

Zambia1 (population 10.7)2 is a landlocked country in Southern Africa that covers an area of 5,664 square kilometres. Its boundaries border Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. Formerly known as Northern Rhodesia, the territory was administered by the South Africa Company from 1891 until it was taken over by the UK in 1923. The name was changed to Zambia upon independence in 1964.

According to the United Nations human development index (HDI), Zambia is ranked 164/175 countries worldwide (value 0.389)3 and 32/45 African countries for which an index is available. This places Zambia in the low development group.
