Palliative Care Workforce Capacity in Zimbabwe

Bekezela Community Home Based Care has 1 executive director; 2 programme directors; 1 driver; and 128 volunteers.

 Dananai Home Based Care Service (Murambinda) is made up of Sr. Onya Cunliffe (trained nurse), 3 assistants (Red Cross trained nurse aides), 3 volunteer doctors and 350 volunteers.

Family AIDS Caring Trust (FACT) has a team of 52 staff and 600 volunteers.

Island Hospice Harare had around 125 staff and volunteers in 2003 based at headquarters or in the high density communities (Table 7).

Island Hospice Bulawayo has a staff of 10; Island Hospice Mutare has 2 State Registered Nurses; 6 caregivers (qualified); 6 caregivers (part qualified) 2 administrative staff; and 1 messenger.

Lubancho House has 20 staff accountable to a board of trustees, including: 1 co-ordinator, 1 project officer; 4 heads of department (1 a nurse); 1 accountant; 1 administrative secretary; 1 receptionist; facilitators/ trainers (1 a nurse); 200 volunteers.

The Mildmay Centre employs around 23 staff (March 2004).

Morgenster Mission Hospital has 1 doctor responsible for the home care programme, 1 accounts clerk and around 400 volunteers (working in close co-operation with 10 district nurses).

Seke Rural Home Based Care has 1 director; 1 HBC co-ordinator; 1 HBC field officer; 1 social worker; 1 palliative care nurse; 1 finance officer; 1bookkeeper; 1 advocacy officer; 1 secretary; 1 office orderly; 1 security guard; 44 supervisors; 400 secondary caregivers. Manyame District has 10 clinics and 2 district hospitals. Patients are usually referred to Chitungwiza General Hospital for medical support.

Thembelihle Halfway Home employs 26 staff, including a manager, nurses, nurse aids, cleaners and cooks. Volunteers support the home based care service.
