Staff Profile - Michael Wright
Senior Research Fellow
Michael Wright
Michael joined the Institute for Health Research in September 2003 having previously worked as a researcher at the University of Sheffield. Prior to that, he was Chaplaincy Manager and Bereavement Services Co-ordinator at the Doncaster Royal and Mexbrough Hospitals NHS Trust. He studied theology at Leeds (BA), education at Bradford (MSc) and the spiritual dimension of health care at Sheffield (PhD) - and trained for the Anglican ministry at Wells Theological College. Since ordination he has worked in parochial ministry and education, becoming head teacher of Eastmoor High School, Wakefield and Carleton High School, Pontefract. He has worked in the prison service, and with his wife, Barbara, spent ten years as a specialist foster parent for adolescents. Michael's research interests lie in the areas of spirituality and the global analysis of palliative care. He is currently involved in three projects: the construction of a world map showing levels of palliative care development, country by country (funded by NHPCO and HtH); a palliative care review in the countries of Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines (OSI); and a survey of international organizations funding palliative care activities in developing countries (OSI).
