Terri O'Brien
Terri O'Brien is a researcher at the Institute for Health Research’s (IHR) International Observatory on End of Life Care; she is currently involved in an evaluation of support services to family carers of people who are terminally ill, funded by Help the Hospices. Terri has a Master's degree in Organisational Analysis from Lancaster University Management School and her ESRC funded PhD doctoral thesis examined the assimilation of overseas nurses in hospital Trusts in the NHS. Her research interests include the Sociology of Professions, New Public Management in the National Health Service (NHS), and the organisation of Palliative Care in the health services today.
As a former student of Ruskin College, Oxford, Terri has practical and academic experience of industrial relations and a diploma in Labour Studies. Her teaching work has included tutoring Industrial Relations to undergraduate students in the Department of Organisation, Work and Technology in the Management School at Lancaster University.
Terri has worked as a nurse for many years in hospitals in the North West of England, continuing to practice though intermittently in acute clinical settings. From 1994 to 1998 she served as an elected member of the United Kingdom Central Council (UKCC) the predecessor of the current Nurses and Midwifery Council (NMC) regulatory body. She continues to enjoy combining her practical nursing skills with academic research.
